Ground source heat pumps used for geothermal heating can be used efficiently to heat a house by drawing heat from the ground, condensing it and delivering it to the building. Systems use the heat pump and a compressor to remove heat from one side of the circuit and eject heat to the other side. A geothermal heat pump moves heat into or out of the earth using either water wells or a network of high-density polyethylene pipes buried in vertical boreholes. The pipes carry a water and antifreeze solution, which is pumped through the pipes buried in the ground.
Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs) use natural heat from the ground to heat your home via pipes buried in the garden. This heat is then used to heat radiators, underfloor or warm air heating systems and hot water. During the winter months heat is taken directly from the ground whilst in summer it can be sourced from a heat sink. As the temperature under the surface of the ground is moderate and remains at a fairly constant temperature, a GSHP can be used all year round. As GSHPs works using a combination of geothermal energy (from the earth's core) and solar energy (from the sun) they are sometimes referred to as geothermal heat pumps, earth energy heat pumps, geo-exchange pumps and water source heat pumps.
A ground source heat pump or geothermal heat pump is an electrically powered device that uses the earth's natural storage of (mainly) solar heat and moves this to provide heating, hot water (or cooling) for buildings. A heat pump can extract heat from ground water directly (open loop) or from the ground via collector pipes (closed loop). Heat pump technology is well proven with components in a heat pump similar to a refrigerator. For more information see our schematic of how a heat pump works. Commercial applications of ground source heat pumps include district heating schemes for dwellings, offices, shops, schools, hospitals and public and community buildings.
The application of Heating, Ventilating, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) controls starts with an understanding of the building and the use of the spaces to be conditioned and controlled.
