We are extremely excited to announce a totally unique design service: 'Pergola Planner'. For the first time you can now develop your own bespoke pergola or arbour for the garden - custom made to your own requirements! Here at Perfect Pergolas we often receive calls from potential customers confused about the difference between these garden structures. There is an incredible amount of information out there in 'internet land' however - most of it is just as bemusing and in some cases simply plain wrong!
Today, pergolas are more likely to be made of wood and are used as a support structure for vines and climbing plants. Think of it as an extension to your home, where for a number of months a year, a pergola lets you enjoy the outdoors in all its glory. Whilst in urban areas, where gardens may be overlooked, a pergola also extends a measure of privacy. One of the most endearing memories of travelling around southern Europe has to be sitting outside a local bistro, on a warm summer's day under a beautiful pergola heavy with grapes, sunlight filtering through the cracks in the foliage and surrounded by the scents from the nearby flowers and shrubs.
Given the timber section we work with for the rafters (38mm x 125mm) the longest unsupported 'span width' is 3.5 meters for the 24hr high pressure treated timber and 4mtrs for oak. This is to prevent any future bowing of the rafters as the years go by. For further information, please refer back to Pergola Information. We can only produce square or rectangular shapes. Whether you send us a sketch on the back of a napkin, or a carefully measured blueprint, we'll work with you to create your Perfect Pergola.
A pergola is designed to provide shade and filtered sunlight and is an ideal structure on which to grow climbing plants as the beams and cross rafters provide a natural support. Originally used to cover walkways in Renaissance times, the pergolas would become covered with vines, creating organic tunnels through which people could wander protected from sun and rain. There are many different varieties of climbers from evergreen to deciduous, some with magnificent flowers and scents and some more suited to specialist conditions - the list is endless.
The wood that we use for our pergolas is cut, trimmed and finished ready for you to assemble straight away. The softwood is also treated and has a 10 year guarantee. The wood comes from responsible certified sources and is audited and approved at the Mill. The oak we use is very long lasting and weathers to a natural classic appearance that complements your existing home and garden beautifully. This is a brilliant material to use where a strong architectural look is required and will give you years of life and pleasure.
