Listed Grade II, Rutland Gardens was constructed mid c19 as stables before its later conversion to residential use. The interior was completely replanned in the 1960s, with a high quality geometric design completely at odds with existing fabric. Our brief was to produce a period replacement sympathetic to the external shell. The elliptical staircase is the key element in achieving these aims. Its open plan relationship to the main living room makes the most of the available width and depth whilst its elliptical shape gives a flowing sculptural quality, inviting the eye upwards to the oculus above.
