With 33 years of experience in sympathetic antique furniture restoration, I specialise in marquetry repair, wood turning, and inlay/veneer restoration. I also provide traditional french polishing on all types of furniture. I am happy to undertake insurance work, whilst recognising that some furniture has a sentimental rather than a purely financial value. Good furniture requires and deserves the right care, and your furniture will be restored using period woods, veneers and construction methods suitable for its era.
My family has been involved in furniture restoration for some 200 years, and I am simply the next generation in our long family tradition. My training, both from family and through my formal apprenticeship of five years, has furnished me with a vast experience in furniture repair and restoration. I have worked on some important pieces in my time, but am equally at home with small repairs, french polishing and even replicating missing parts, all using traditional techniques and methods. What matters to me is the quality of the finished article and that you, as the client, are entirely satisfied.
French polishing - a variety of polishes can be used depending on the finish required. Shellac, the resin of the lac beetle, is used to provide a high quality traditional finish, which was used on most antique furniture. Tradtional French Polishing gives a depth of finish that other methods simply cannot achieve. Inlay and marquetry is the application or repair of slices of woods or veneers that have been applied to give a geometric design (parquetry), organic shapes and designed (marquetry) and thin inlays (stringing).
