Tiled roofs in Scotland vary from those clad with original clay Pantiles to the more modern clay and concrete tiles. Tiles became popular in Scotland as a result of the demise of the slate industry, with clay companies such as Rosemary (plain tiles) acquiring a large share of the market place. A significant proportion of clay Pantiles are found in coastal areas where tiles were used for ballast on the many commercial sailing ships trading in Scottish waters. The fixing of tiles in Scotland has improved significantly over the last fifty years, as manufacturers have become aware that our climate is, at best, inconsistent!
Our roofing consultancy services are carried out by a separate company called GMRC Partnership Roofing Consultants & Surveyors. For over 20 years Graeme Millar has been providing advice on all aspects of roofing from pre-purchase roofing surveys to advice on contentious issues. Graeme is currently Immediate Past President of the National Federation of Roofing Contractors UK, Chairman of the Heritage Committee UK and Vice Chairman of the Slating & Tiling Committee UK.
Flat roofs, particularly built-up bituminous felt flat roofs, have been criticised over the years for their lack of consistency in retaining a watertight barrier. This criticism was justified, certainly in the early days, but now the quality of the felts that manufacturers are producing has improved dramatically. Bain & Irvine lay only the best of flat roofs with our approved contractor status jealously guarded. Polyglass, Icopal and Garland supply our bituminous felts with ICB supplying our single ply membranes.
Bain and Irvine are qualified to fit all types of slating and tiling. Two of our slaters are qualified to CSCS Gold Card standard which allows both employees to work on pre 1919 buildings within the Heritage sector. Our Managing Director Graeme Millar has achieved Roof master status within the Heritage roofing category giving him design and construction qualifications which are recognised by the main conservation bodies throughout the UK, including Historic Scotland. Bain and Irvine are approved ICOPAL installer of flat roofing products, including built up felt work and modern single ply alternatives.
