We at B&SC are an independent, professional company providing a variety of engineering and surveying services. We offer professional structural engineering design and calculations to British Standards and Eurocodes, as well as structural engineers' reports. We also offer the diagnosis of building defects including damage caused by the movement of foundations through subsidence and heave. We can provide a range of building surveys and can act for you as a party wall surveyor whether you are the "Building Owner" proposing work which impacts on a party wall, or the neighbour who could be affected by it.

B&SC offer building surveying services as well as structural engineering consultancy. We offer our unique "Structure-Only" survey which keeps costs down by limiting the inspection and report to structural and load-bearing elements only i.e. This type of inspection is less expensive than the full Building Survey as it is limited in its scope. It is suitable for those who are only really concerned with structural defects. For example; buyers who intend to undertake extensive renovation / modernisation works.

We are currently looking for two structural engineers experienced in domestic construction, one to cover South London and adjacent home counties, and one in Essex. This is a home-based role with admin and technical support from our Essex hub. Full driving licence and own transport is essential. Mainly small domestic jobs such as minor alterations, loft conversions, extensions, structural appraisal of houses etc. If you are interested and think that you might fit the bill, we would be happy to receive your cv and contact details.

If your building is showing signs of movement, such as cracking of the walls or ceilings it may be due to movement of the foundations from either subsidence or heave. We have structural engineers highly experienced in this area of defect diagnosis who will inspect your property (either personally, or via video link) and advise you on the cause of the problem, and provide a report for presentation to your insurers if necessary. We can continue on your behalf to arrange foundation & site investigations (trial pits, boreholes, drain testing and subsoil testing) and advise on the most appropriate remedy.

If you're intending to carry out work on your party wall, to construct a new wall at the boundary or to excavate for a new foundation close to your neighbour, then you may be required to serve a Party Wall Notice to your neighbour in advance of the works. If you have been served a Party Wall Notice by your neighbour and would like advice on the correct way to respond, or would like to appoint your own Party Wall Surveyor to deal with your case then please call us. Our surveyors are members of the Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors and can act for you as the Building Owner's survey, the Adjoining Owner's survey or jointly as the Agreed Surveyor.

If you are proposing to alter or extend your building, or construct a new one, you will need professional advice, and most likely the preparation of structural design calculations (to British Standards or Eurocodes as appropriate) for submission to the local authority under Building Regulations - as well as for the builder. We offer structural design and calculations for steel, concrete and timber beams, joists and lintels, masonry wall panels, roofs and general overall building stability. Sometimes, calculations are required to assess existing structures for retrospective compliance with Building Regulations or safety following alterations.
