Portable appliance testing (PAT) is the term used to describe the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use. There is no legal obligation to carry out a portable appliance test (PAT test) on portable electrical appliances (washing machines, dishwashers etc) for rented residential accommodation except if you have an employee working or living in rented accommodation (e.g. in a care home). However, the Electrical Safety Council's Guidance recommends PAT to ensure appliances are safe for the tenants.
If your home or business has been flooded, then you will need an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) from a registered electrician. This will identify the condition of the wiring and electrical equipment that is in need of repair. This includes testing all fixed equipment, such as, an electric cooker, storage heaters, boilers, etc. and the portable electrical appliances affected by the flood. It is very important that you do not attempt to turn back on the electricity mains supply until an electrical safety assessment has been done.
