We have a collection of childrens' chairs for sale in our small private showroom in Little Glebe. We replace woven seating to chairs, stools etc using Cane, Seagrass, Danish and other paper cords and Riempie. We are also able to make some repairs to Lloyd loom and 'wicker' and undertake a very limited amount of rushing. Sue specializes in the exacting finishing styles of French and continental caning and has a particular interest in Thonet and other bentwood furniture. She describes her methods of caning to be "historically correct"!
We still have all our childrens' chairs for your long awaited grand/child although a couple have now been bagged for our first crop of grandchildren! We have yet to finish the wood, drill the holes for the cane and then cane the seat and back and foot rest. These will be made to order and, for an additional charge will also be available in Walnut, Iroko or English Oak. The foot rest is optional as will be an additional piece to use as a side table or as an extension of the footrest. The price of this chair completed and made in beech, will be around 1700 without the footrest/table.
I learned how to recane chairs nearly 30 years ago in order to restore my Great-Grandmother's nursing chair (left) and soon realised that my new-found skill was in demand. Since then I have added rush, Danish cord, seagrass and Lloyd loom repairs to my repertoire. There are several different patterns used in caned furniture and we are able to copy whatever was originally on the chair or any other pattern required. All the doubles -fish heads to those from the US - are in the correct place and there are Xs all around the edge.
