Melia Smith & Jones was established as a partnership in Leeds in 1987 by Brian Melia, Mike Smith and Steve Jones, to provide a consultancy service in the fields of structural and civil engineering. Mike's retirement in August 2000 led to the formation of Melia Smith & Jones Ltd by Brian and Steve. In September 2002, Alex Bell and Neil Chambers were appointed as co-directors with Steve and Brian in order to both reinforce the firm's commitment to Client support at a senior level and to place the firm in a strong position for planned long-term growth.

MSJ have undertaken foul, surface and waste water drainage designs on numerous industrial, commercial and residential developments. We prepare designs to the requirements of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) and make use of the latest Microdrainage software. We can check/design the network for flooding potential and to calculate flood attenuation volumes. Our designs have been adopted under Section 104 Agreements and have also complied with the Code for Sustainable Homes. We have also prepared flood risk assessments and drainage strategies to assist in planning applications.

MSJ are committed to working together with Clients and other members of design teams, to play their part in successfully completing projects. Such an approach has led to the establishment of long-term relationships which have continued from one project to the next. The consulting engineer's early input is recommended to establish such fundamentals as, structural form and layout, appropriate site investigations and construction materials and methods, to the benefit of all parties. Personnel allocated to a project are those with the most appropriate skills and experience.

Melia, Smith & Jones have been working in various areas of the Residential sector since inception. MSJ have experience in multi-storey apartment buildings in various materials including steel, concrete, timber frame and load bearing masonry. Our great range and depth of experience in these areas for over 25 years means that we have extensive expertise in this sector and are able to engineer economical solutions to the varying needs of our clients. The project involves the refurbishment, re-build and alteration of the original stone building of the former boarding school on the site.
