Our showrooms are open by appointment only, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays 11am - 5pm. It's always useful to make an appointment if you know that you will be seeking Chris' guidance and expertise - and if our normal opening hours don't suit we will always do our best to accommodate you. We are proud to still be hand-making in Britain with a small team comprising a mix of time served craftsmen whose skills have been honed over many years and youthful dynamism. The Real Wood Furniture Company has established a reputation for quality, attention to detail and integrity.
Our mirrors are as much about the beautiful timber frames as the function they fulfil. From a large farmhouse mirror above a dresser, to a cunningly adjustable cheval mirror for the bedroom, they are all contributing to the beauty of your rooms and helping to create light and the feeling of space. You are invited to see, touch and seek inspiration, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays 11am - 5pm (BY APPOINTMENT ONLY), when expert guidance will always be on hand. We are also available outside these hours by appointment only.
The mighty oak that although native to most of Europe, seems to evoke connotations of 'solid Englishness', reliability, strength, and dependability. Indeed, it is all these things and perfect for many furniture uses. Craftsmen have long cherished English oak for its beautiful grain and figuring, above plainer oak from elsewhere. We specialise in the use of English, Pippy and Burr Oak. In general terms, 'pippy oak' (also knows and cat's paw oak) refers to clusters of very small knots often caused by cattle nibbling shoots from the trunk of a tree as it grows, causing new shoots to grow and be nibbled off again, and by the 'epicormic' nature of oak, whereby trees often sprout new buds underneath their bark or after coppicing.
Our polishing team then bring to the fore the beauty of the grain of the timbers, all contributing to the realisation of Chris' exacting specifications. We use many traditional methods and techniques whilst utilising contemporary machinery and methods developed within our workshop practice to help the process of making. We still cut dove tail joints by hand for instance, and use a rudimentary steam cabinet for bending parts of our chairs, including many parts for our Windsor chairs. You are invited to see, touch and seek inspiration, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays 11am - 5pm (BY APPOINTMENT ONLY), when expert guidance will always be on hand.
As with dressers, proportion is everything when it comes to making cabinets. Everyone can recognise a piece that seems clumsy or 'lumpy', and sometimes we do not give credit to pieces that just 'feel right'. We have made hundreds of cabinets, ranging from small chests of drawers to large glazed top bookcases. Our long experience of making new cabinet furniture, and also of handling antique cabinet furniture gives us a great understanding of proportion which is our starting point for the making of a piece that is both practical and fit for purpose.
We have sourced a range of soft furnishing from two companies who embrace our own high standards of design and quality. From a traditionally styled Knole sofa with our own signature burr oak finials, to a sleek leather sofa with chrome feet, we can offer a tailor made option to suit you, with a wide range of fabrics and leathers to choose from at our showrooms. These pieces are built with the same attention to detail as our own furniture and provide sumptuous seating. You are invited to see, touch and seek inspiration, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays 11am - 5pm (BY APPOINTMENT ONLY), when expert guidance will always be on hand.
After 20 years of successful and enjoyable trading in Woodstock, The Real Wood Furniture Company has relocated to larger showrooms in a beautifully restored former Coaching Inn, one mile North East of Chipping Norton town centre. We have undertaken a lengthy and thorough restoration of our beautiful building which was built in 1704. The Inn has been through many changes, and has seen numerous uses over the years. At one time the building was split into three separate cottages, but then subsequently converted back to one large residence.

Once a piece is completed in the woodworking stage it is then passed on to our skilled team of polishers who's job it is to bring out and enhance the beauty of the grain. Depending on the desired finish, this will involve painstaking hours working with oils, natural pigment umbers, stains and wax. This process guarantees that we make the most of the carefully selected timbers we work with, adding to the uniqueness of each piece. We have our own range of finishes (below) but can colour match to your existing furniture, or other colours, if required.
