Browse our large collection of antique wooden fireplaces, mantels and chimneypieces in a selection of mahogany, oak, walnut and pine. Styles range from Jacobean and Renaissance to Art Deco and Art Nouveau. Antique wooden fireplaces have been enjoyed for centuries. From the earliest examples, heavily carved and worn with time, to strikingly simple Arts and Crafts fireplaces, we try to stock a variety of styles and sizes. Antique wooden mantels are a fabulous way of injecting character into a property, or just making a statement.
Our Victorian fireplaces make up one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of antique chimneypieces and mantels found anywhere in the world. As the Edwardian era followed and overlapped the Victorian Era, we have also included our Edwardian fireplaces in this section. The Victorian era was the period of Queen Victoria's reign (1837 to 1901) - and this being one of the longest reigns of a British monarch, her time as Queen saw not only a change of centuries, but also various transitions of interior styles and fashions.
Lighting has the ability to utterly transform the home. For style, atmosphere and drama, antique lights can be the perfect choice. Our collection of antique lighting ranges from lanterns, chandeliers and antique wall lights to a large selection of vintage and unusual pieces. The history of the antique wall light, or sconce, begins with the wall mounted torch. These were usually made of cast iron, a portable torch which could be taken from room to room or out of the house. This later developed into the rush light, where a rush, or reed would be dipped in fat to make a rudimentary candle, and then balanced inside a wall mounted sconce.
Anthony is our Head of Restoration and one of our Directors, overseeing the transformation of our stock from purchase to sale. He is a talented cabinet maker and his love of working with his hands came from his Grandfather, who taught him the cabinetmaking trade from a very young age. He still learns a great deal from 19th and 20th century manuals, whether it be the history of specific items or how best to repair them. On a normal day you will find him in our wood workshop, but he can turn his hand to many other things, from spinning metal and painting stained glass to carving marble.
Our stunning collection of antique marble fireplaces, mantels and chimneypieces features fireplaces made in a variety of different antique marbles, including Sienna marble, Statuary marble, Cippolino marble and Verde Antico marble. Marble has been used in architecture for thousands of years, dating back to the ancient Mesopotamian and Egyptian cultures. Its ability to bear immense weight made it ideal for supporting structures and monolithic columns in public, private and religious buildings. Prized for its beauty and resilience, marble has been used in some of the world's most iconic buildings, including the Parthenon, the Taj Mahal and the Palace of Versailles.
Love the fireplace I bought, such excellent staff, Laura attended to my every need.
This showstopping wall mirror features wonderfully modelled musical instruments on its frame - a beautiful detail and perhaps commissioned for someone with a keen interest in music!
This lovely Arts and Crafts firegrate has a detailed bacchanalian scene with dancing satyrs and Maenads, which would be even more dramatic with flames licking their heels!
A glimpse of our Georgian Gallery, where we celebrate everything 18th century, from the grandest of chimneypeices to the most dainty of hand painted chairs.
New in is a stunning 18th century bronze register grate, possibly Irish. It is such a rare survival and we think it has restored beautifully!
