I have extensive and long experience, having worked in various local authorities and private practices before starting my own practice in 1992. Most of my work is in the residential sector - new houses, house extensions, and extensions to care homes. The project starts with an initial briefing session, followed up with a survey if necessary. The next stage is to produce sketches of various ideas and approaches to find a design that suits the Client. There may be two or three meetings for this purpose before the final design is drawn up and submitted for planning permission.
The owners of this lovely Regency-style 60's house wanted to extend the kitchen with a breakfast-room (the kitchen is to the front of the house), and also to provide a home office. Above is a sequence of shots showing the various building stages. It seemed a shame to alter the front of the house at all, but the solution was to attach a single storey breakfast-room to intrude the minimum possible on the main facade. This has a large lantern light to allow light to reach back into the kitchen and to provide an interesting roofline, as well as to provide excellent light to the breakfast-room itself.
