Based in the Peak District National Park on the edge of Sheffield, Studio Gedye creates great places for people to live and work. Studio Gedye are architects with a great reputation for outstanding design on projects ranging from new houses, extensions and alterations to barn and chapel conversions. Our work varies in scale from a master plan for a new nature reserve for the RSPB to a 10,000 sq ft of workspace for creative businesses at Sum Studios, a creative hub for business, arts and community in Sheffield.
The brief was for a sustainable building that could be used for a variety of uses long term. The studio is built on nine concrete pads off the earth. This is a lightweight framed construction with cantilevered end bays and we avoided pouring large volumes of concrete into the ground. The structure and walling is all timber, with larch boarding and timber shingle roof externally. A fully glazed bay window lights the studio and a corresponding lantern sits on the apex to bring diffused light into the studio space.
