Designed by Conran and Partners, on a steep hillside site in Newcastle, the Quayside Lofts development incorporated an underground carpark above which is a landscaped roof garden forming a 'courtyard' between two residential blocks. Munro Associates were commissioned to design all the external soft landscaping on this challenging site. This included planting on the steep slopes beside the Tuthill Stairs and an 'intensive green roof' garden above the underground carparking. To reduce the weight on the carpark roof and also provide visual interest by creating a slight slope, EPS ballast was placed under the soil/growing medium and trees and large bushes were introduced along with smaller flowering plants to create year round interest.

In their role as Architects, Munro Associates, often provide a full service including the interior design for many of our more high profile projects. This service can vary in scope from the design of individual bespoke pieces (stairs, fireplaces, doors, dado panelling etc) to a full interior design including choice of floor and wall finishes, sanitary ware and kitchen layouts etc. As well as the input from experienced Architects, Munro Associates, also has the expertise of a dedicated interior designer for jobs that are mostly interior led i.e. bar, shop and other commercial fit outs etc.

From time to time the usual architectural/landscape remit has been extended to include commissions in closely related sectors such as interior design. As a creative enterprise, our approach is just the same - translating clients' aspirations into successful, cost effective projects. Included within this section under the title "Graphic Design" are projects which although primarily architectural in nature have perhaps more in common with the discipline of graphics, where such features as railings, walls and entrance gateways are specifically designed to seamlessly embed company (client) motifs and logos.

For many clients moving to a new home or building their own from scratch is either not a possibility or not desirable. With our long experience of working with residential buildings Munro Associates work closely with clients to explore getting the most out of an existing building whether it's through a loft/attic conversion, extension or other internal alterations. Munro Associates dual discipline as both Architects and Landscape Architects means we also seek to maximise external spaces and create a synergy between indoor and outdoor living spaces.

Working with existing buildings can be challenging for both client and architect alike but with careful attention to detail and perseverance it is also one of the most rewarding processes. Munro Associates have a great deal of experience in this field whether it is simply converting an existing building to another use or conserving and restoring a listed building. The bureaucracy involved in applying for planning permissions for a listed building or even simply a building located in a conservation area can seem very daunting for a client but with careful piloting an application can make it through to the other side!

Master planning, where a strategic framework permits various desired architectural, engineering and landscape elements to be seamlessly and coherently integrated within a grand concept, is a service which Munro Associates is well placed to provide. Experience and knowledge in two of these primary disciplines, together with 30 years experience in working with other professionals such as engineers and surveyors allow us a unique insight into master plan development. Projects undertaken include advance site preparation for business park development and working on layouts for roads and landscaping as part of a consultant team for several MoD sites.
