Chimneys are an integral part of any house especially if they have an open or gas fire and/or a log burner. We think of our chimney as a means to dispose of our unwanted gasses and smoke - and of course that is its preliminary job. It must also be lined and have measures to stop pests and birds. It is very important your chimney is maintained but don't worry this is not an annual fixture and if done properly can be left for many years. Your Chimney, and the flue's real function is to carry dangerous gases from you fireplace, wood stove or furnace safely out of your home.

Fascia and soffits are basically the coverings you see at your roofline - on top of the cavity wall and covering the roof rafters where your gutters are (screwed to). Originally these were always made from timber but more recently you see uPVC alternatives. If you have timber fascia and soffits and you require "maintenance free" you may opt for a full replacement or capping boards. More details on these solutions are below. All our full replacement fascia is 18mm thick (the cover fascia is 10mm thick along with all the soffits).

GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) Roofing is most commonly known as Fibre Glass Roofing, and if properly laid it will last for at least 50 years with no measurable deterioration. This has to be laid this in dry conditions normally onto dry deck (OSB boards are our choice of materials) and not below 5 °C.

Roofing Slates are a type of roof shingle, or more specifically a type of roof tile. Slate has a beautiful and natural appearance and a good slate should be relatively flat and easy to overlay - minimising gaps. As slate has an extremely low water absorption index (less than 0.4%), this makes it more resistant to frost damage and of course a very good and robust roofing material. Typically slate roof tiles are usually fixed either with nails (UK method), or with hooks (Spanish method). A Red Stag new slate roof comes with a 25 year guarantee (again backed by our suppliers), but we strongly believe you would have a long lasting weathertight roof with a lifespan of around 80-100 years.

The roof and gutters need to be checked and maintained regularly. We advise an annual gutter clean and roof inspection (including chimneys). Some properties may need regular gutter cleaning due to large trees in close proximity. The roof and gutters are there to keep your property water tight and indeed channel the water away from perishable materials. Failure to maintain the roof and gutters can lead to expensive work and replacement of water damaged timbers and/or decorative finishes (fascia & soffits), which will deteriorate rapidly in damp conditions.
