Get 3 Free QuotesRising damp is when moisture is absorbed from the ground into the walls, by capillary action through the pores of the masonry seeking a means of evaporation. All new houses are built with a Damp proof course (DPC) which forms a barrier against the moisture rising. Older houses however may have been built without a DPC or it may have deteriorated over time or changes to the building may have compromised the DPC, i.e. built up patios breaching the DPC. Garage buildings may have been converted without installing a DPC or maybe you are thinking about converting a garage and not sure if you need a DPC?

Rising damp is the action of water moving vertically through porous building material, which is in contact with the ground. This is brought about by the drying action of air on the upper surfaces which causes the wall to act like a wick, drawing water upwards from the ground by capillary action, which then evaporates from the surface into the atmosphere.

Champion Timber keep large stocks of damp proof sheeting and bands to aid you in your work. Manufactured from reprocessed materials and provides a barrier to the passage of moisture in brick and block work from external sources. A damp-proof membrane (DPM) is a membrane material applied to prevent moisture transmission. A common example is polyethylene sheeting laid under a concrete slab to prevent the concrete from gaining moisture through capillary action. A DPM may be used for the DPC. We have got the products you need to properly damp proof your property, available in sheets or rolls for ease of application in a variety of sizes and colours.
Our approach to resolving this house's multiple issue was multifaceted. We performed a partial tanking of all affected areas and removed all of the damp and damaged plasterwork. In addition, we removed 300mm of good plasterwork and all floor bound skirting boards affected by the issues. We then injected a new chemical damp proof course to prevent issues recurring. We applied tanking slurry to bricks and added two coats of internal render. Finally, we reskimmed all the affected areas to ensure a polished finish.
Rising damp can arise for various reasons; the failure of an existing damp proof course (dpc), bridging due to external high ground level or the complete absence of a damp proof course. Brick, stone and mortar are porous allowing damp from the ground to rise by capillary action, carrying with it ground salts including chlorides and nitrates. These salts from the ground can absorb moisture from the atmosphere leading to damp walls which will also break down internal plaster. Replastering subsequent to our injected chemical damp proof course is an integral part of our damp proof course.
