This document explains ways of repairing and draught proofing existing doors and windows of a historic building for improved energy efficiency. To quote from the document: "Draught-proofing is one of the most cost effective and least intrusive ways of improving the comfort of occupants and reducing energy used for heating with little or no change to a building's appearance."

We offer an independent UK wide consultancy service where we can assess the needs of sash windows on behalf of individuals or corporate clients. We provide a schedule of works with an indicative costing for all interventions to sash windows. This service provides commissioners, including architects, builders, corporate bodies and landlords with a per-window assessment of maintenance and restoration work that a sash may need. In addition, we can simplify the tendering process as we provide exact descriptions of the type of interventions we think appropriate, this enables clients to seek the services they actually need, as opposed to the services others would wish to supply.

We are often asked if it is possible to double glaze existing sash windows and generally the answer is yes, but please read on. Insulated Glazing Units (IGU's) this is the correct name for the glass unit in a doubled glazed sash. They normally consist of two peices of 4 mm thick clear or obscured glass bound together with glazing tape with a 'spacer' to hold the glass apart. The IGU is then filled with an inert gas, which effectively does all the work of stopping the heat transferring through the unit.

A Draught Reduction Service includes a full sash cord service. In addition, as part of the rebuild we integrate a system of weatherpile carriers and weather seals into the beadings and sashes. Once professionally draught-proofed, rebalanced and re-corded, your sash windows will operate smoothly, with less rattles and significantly reduced draughts, providing you with many years of comfortable operation. Current government legislation allows us to charge lower rate VAT on our draught reduction services.

A fully serviced sash window will open and close properly and should not need further attention (other than periodic painting) for up to 20 years. Professionally re-cording and rebalancing your windows to restore them to correct working order. The lower sash service includes a strip down and rebuild of the lower sash with two new cords. Bookings are subject to minimum order levelsminimum order levels. A full sash window service is a more cost-effective solution. Single sashes rarely fail in isolation, so it makes good sense to have both upper and lower sashes serviced at once, to ensure a fully working window for years to come.
