Penetrating damp is the ingress of water through the external skin of the building. If left untreated it can cause significant damage to a building both to the internal fabric and structure. If left untreated this penetrating water can cause significant damage to the internal decorations of your property but more important, the structural integrity. Penetrating damp is caused by rainwater entering a property through the external wall. The wall in your home should repel rainwater but in some cases, rainwater will find a way through the wall.

Rising damp is moisture entering the property from the ground up the walls using capillary action. Depending on the age of your property your damp proof course will prevent moisture rising up the walls but older properties often do not have a DPC. A damp proof course in a newer property can fail allowing moisture to bypass the barrier. Rising damp can cause significant issues to a building. The visible signs of spoiled internal decorations mask a bigger issue including replacing plaster in the affected area and structural timber decay.

The tell-tale holes are the result of the beetle grubs boring through the roofing and flooring timbers or any timber in the area. If left untreated the grubs can weaken the tensile strength of structural timbers and this can result in floors or roofs collapsing.
