Aurora Conservatories is the conservatory brand name of Lee Micklethwait (York) Ltd. Lee Micklethwait is a business that can trace its heritage in timber and glass building back to the early 1900's. Micklethwait Brothers were established joiners in York at the turn of the 20th Century. John Leslie Micklethwait was of a more independent mind, preferring to go his own way. He proudly established himself in business initially in Toft Green York, then The Stonebow York and in 1969 at The Old Station Naburn, when he bought the disused platform and buildings of the abandoned station - the home of our business today.
Conservatories have evolved in leaps and bounds over the last two and a half decades, that we have made them the mainstay of our business. Improved glazing techniques and more durable materials are examples of how our 21st Century conservatory will last and even outlast the lifespan of the 18th and 19th Century conservatories previously assumed to be of a quality only available in bygone eras. Whether a traditional or modern Conservatory, a contemporary Orangery or a tiled garden Room our skill as builders alongside manufacturers enables us to best match your requirements.
The Orangery in its modern context can be designed in many forms, combining glazed, timber and masonry elements. It is often perceived as a lantern roof surrounded by a flat area, sat upon an enhanced conservatory framework but there are many alternatives. The advantage of an Orangery being a more solid appearance from the inside, to create a room that is part of your house and lifestyle. In practice the bespoke rooms our customers commission span the complete range from contemporary larger glass panes to intricate and detailed structures that draw influence from previous eras.
Typically a Garden room is the name given to buildings with a solid or mainly solid roof structure. Often featuring exposed beams or internal detailing for an even more solid feel whilst enjoying the light and visit of large glazed elements. It's the third variation on the theme of buildings with large glazed elements, most of the buildings constructed often feature our client's specific ideas and in many cases combine a conservatory, orangery and garden room. Anything can and often is incorporated.
