So here at ABi we were intrigued when we were approached by Swan Lane Developments to work with them on an apartment construction that featured a very contemporary aesthetic. The plans for this development featured a double garage door that opened straight onto a road so straight away it was obvious that any type of door that opened out wasn't going to work.

Up and Over garage doors first started to appear around the same time that motor cars were becoming popular. Also known as 'one piece' or 'single panel' garage doors, their construction and mechanisms have been refined over the years, but they still operate and function in pretty much the same way. There is a good reason for this, and that is because they work very well. They offer high levels of security and are very reliable. Up and Over doors are available in a number of construction materials including steel, timber and GRP (fibre-glass).

Sectional garage doors have been around a surprisingly long time but they only started to gain popularity in the UK in recent years. A sectional or 'overhead' garage door opens vertically upwards and is suspended under the ceiling when in the door is in the open position. This type of mechanism means that the door does not swing out when it is opening, so you can safely park your vehicle in front of the door. It also allows for flexible and weatherproof seals on all four sides of the door, dramatically increasing the insulating properties of the product.

Side hinged or 'swing open' doors have been around a very long time, and although the products that are installed on modern domestic properties have been refined somewhat, the term 'barn door' is also still used. Side hinged doors are available with either a centre or off-centre split. An off-centre split creates an access door, which can be positioned either side of the main door. This can be particularly useful if you need to use the garage regularly for things that don't involve a vehicle, like access to your freezer or gardening tools.

Traditionally the mainstay of warehouse and fire station entrances, vertically rolling doors have become incredibly popular as domestic products in the last few years. Vertically rolling garage doors, or 'roller doors' feature a curtain that rolls into a coil or barrel, positioned above the garage opening. The vertical opening mechanism means that the door does not swing out when it is opening so you can safely park right up to the door. As their name suggests, roller doors roll.
