James Ritchie left the firm of Mauchlen Weightman & Elphick in February 1999 to form his own architectural practice. Since then JRA have undertaken a broad range of both architectural and CDM commissions across the North of England of various size and complexity. We specialise in the areas of Architectural Lighting Design, Listed Building Work, Construction Risk Management, Sustainable Architecture and Renewable Energy Projects. We concern ourselves with considered creative design and try to encourage high standards of professionalism, with the careful integration of related professional groups and differing skills of other disciplines.
JRA sees residential projects as a team approach where the architect works in close collaboration with the end user/client. Working on a private house requires a detailed understanding of the householder's lifestyle and desires and JRA believes that an architect's job is to interpret these requirements with flair to produce a design scheme that might otherwise not have been realised by the client. JRA has a detailed knowledge of sustainable design issues and can advise clients regarding the possibilities of incorporating renewable energy systems into their projects and the upgrading of existing building fabrics in the most sustainable and practical way.
JRA has undertaken numerous commercial projects in the Industrial, Office, Hotel and Night Club sectors across the North East. We always try to combine high quality design with an understanding of the Client's commercial demands, including detailed consideration for not only the capital cost of any project but also the longer term cost-in-use and sustainability implications of our designs. JRA have undertaken a number of small scale housing developments and have, in particular, worked with timber frame construction techniques for more than 20 years, in some cases producing houses with energy consumption figures far lower than those required by the Building Regulations.
