Here at South West Thatching we cover the whole of Cornwall and beyond, as hugely enthusiastic young men, who are truly passionate about our trade, we seek to go that extra mile to deliver what we and many others believe to be the highest standard of thatching in Cornwall. We look past the run down attire of the roof which is essential compost in its dying days and work to transform the thatch into some of our finest work yet, questioning at every stage how we can improve the design, shape or style to suit the individual buildings heritage.
We can provide the complete roofing package from start to finish, this includes the installation of all roofing timbers, the installation of any fire protection which includes either a fire felt or board and of course the thatch itself. We work long side the thatching advisory service who provide all the relevant fire protection, as well as the fire board and felt they can also provide first alert heat sensors that can be placed inside the brickwork of a chimney to alert the owner of a chimney fire.
On average in Cornwall Wheat reed will last between 15 and 20 years. Water reed will last between 25 and 30 years. This is all dependant on the quality of thatching the material, the pitch of the roof and where it is located. E.g. A flat pitched roof in a valley wont last as long as a steeply pitched roof with plenty of air circulation. We are asked this question often, and no thatching is not a dying trade, with over 1500 thatchers nation wide it is still a very popular trade to enter into, but training is very long and hard which puts a lot of people off.
Just what we like to see on a cold and snowy February morning, a huge load of Austrian Water reed, will soon warm us up getting this lot on the roof! SWT
Today we spent a few hours at Prussia cove repairing the back of this cottage. We applied what is called a huntsmans coat, this involves layering and pushing the material into the the existing roof then fixing with hazel to creat a temporary covering, this should last 12+ months and keep any rain.
First completed jobs of the new year. The first is a full rethatch at Tregony in combed Wheat, finished with a pattern cut ridge and owl requested by the customer. The second being an extremely worn out log store/well covering, completed in Water reed with a flush cut wrap over ridge.
Completed today, this farmhouse in St Day has had a full re coat on the back combined with a new flush ridge with a pattern cut ridge with moss removal on the front, looking good for Christmas Thanks to Sarah and James plus Barbara and gang
