Thatched roofs have covered British homes for centuries. This age-old craft symbolises our rich cultural heritage and contrary to popular belief, the traditional master thatcher job role continues to thrive. The performance of thatch depends on roof shape and design, pitch of roof, position - its geography and topography - the quality of material and the expertise of the Thatcher. Maintaining a thatched property can be costly, but I strive to offer the best possible price without sacrificing quality, in order to keep the beautiful art of traditional roof thatching alive.
If you are a thatch house owner you may have had various lifespans for materials told to you. They normally state that water reed will last 50-60 years and combed wheat straw will last 30-35 years. This can occasionally be the case, however with the rise in climate change and more vehicle emissions these old timescales need revising. One way to make sure you get the maximum lifespan from your roof is to maintain it. All to often I see thatch roofs that may have survived 10 or 20 years longer, if only there had been a regular maintenance plan in place.
Grant Batchelor Master Thatcher offers a range of thatching services, catering for all roof types, including gazebos, well tops, porches, and sheds; we offer the complete thatching service for your home! Being based in Oxfordshire, we have built a high reputation for being a leading team of master thatchers, providing our services to homes, barns, summer houses, pubs and other commercial roofings. As a thatch nears the end of its life it will start to leak in places. To extend the life of a coat a patch can often be used.
Grant Batchelor Master Thatcher has been providing high quality thatch roof construction to properties in and around Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Buckinghamshire and Gloucestershire for many years. Within that time, we have built a great client base, which we're extremely proud of! This is just a small selection of the thatched roof work that we have completed, but we hope that this gives you a glimpse of the projects that we are able to complete.
I love this look on a dwelling, I think I was born too late. I think thatched roofs and wooden beams, inglenook fireplaces are cosy and charming. I don't find the minimalist look in the least bit attractive.
Harry Lee Davis dressing the coat as we come close to finishing in Badby.
Finished this little summer house today in Beaconsfield.
Someone broke into my van again last night. 4th time over the years. Lovely start to the day.
