Not all loft conversions require planning permission but all lofts do require Building Control Regulations. Where you require space and headroom we would erect a Dormer conversion which allows an extension to the existing space and headroom within the loft conversion. A dormer can most easily be identified as a protrusion from the slope of the roof, normally at the rear of the property. Where a house has a hip roof there tends not to be enough internal volume for a conversion to be practical, so a hip to gable conversion is the best solution.
