John Curran Building Ltd is a well-established Cambridge building company which has built up a first-class reputation in the building industry by successfully delivering high-quality projects. The company's core values are attention to detail, respect for our clients and to offer true value for money. We're proud to say that we've maintained a strong belief in good workmanship and a job well done. Whatever the size of the undertaking, our whole team are aware of the responsibility they have for quality, safety and respect for the environment as well as our clients budget and expectations.
Travertine tiling has been particularly popular for the last few years as both a floor and wall tile in kitchens and especially bathrooms. We can lay tiled floors onto both concrete and suspended timber incorporating both electric and wet under floor heating systems. Porcelain, ceramic, slate and other natural stone. Even flag stones in rustic kitchens. Not sure if this really counts as tiling!
From simply adding top up fibreglass to your loft area to lining the inside of your outside walls with insulation and plasterboard then all the making good associated with this. We are also able to offer an insulation service to your suspended ground floor. A few boards are carefully lifted and then cellulose insulation is blown into specially made " hammocks" suspended between the joists. We recommend a chimney test if you have an open fire to ensure there is adequate ventilation after the insulation process.
Carpentry and joinery are the main stays of our business. Why? Because they touch almost every aspect of the building work we undertake. Our carpenters can get involved in so many aspects of any build it makes them invaluable in the smooth, free flow of the project because they will have been involved in the previous task likely as not. But the actual carpentry work we do is for example, all of the first fixing that goes in in a general build and then to the second fix and detail work. We build all sorts of bespoke cupboards, wardrobes, storage solutions - in lofts, under stairs, in the garden.
We have worked a wide variety of loft conversion projects. They are always different and each house comes with its own unique set of challenges to overcome. We work closely with some of Cambridge's most highly respected architects and structural engineers. We have an excellent relationship with the building control department at the Cambridge City Council and with private building control companies. One of our more challenging lofts had no fewer than twenty-three steels in the construction! It incorporated a bedroom and a wet room in the loft area and alterations to the whole of the first floor.
From Garden walls, raised beds, retaining walls, patios and paths to timber decking, ballustrading, tree houses and fences. We will build it to last. Unlike some shady companies, John Curran builds our patios on a solid, well-constructed base to ensure they can stand the test of time!
If you need structural repairs then no doubt an engineer or your insurance company will have liaised with you and your builder. But this sort of work will include the insertion of steel beams and lintels to either replace faulty or damaged ones, those that have been identified as having been incorrectly specified and installed by previous owner / builder, upgrading because of additional loading ie a loft conversion on top an existing opening. Sometimes it will be to strengthen a spreading timber roof by adding straps and restraints or a new steel ridge beam.
We are happy to work with your plumber or to do the whole bathroom installation. More often than not these days, a new bathroom involves so much more than just changing the sanitaryware. There are so many possibilities. Concealed cisterns, built in cabinets and furniture, built in shower valves, walk in showers, wet rooms, both electric and wet under floor heating. We can do the builders work and co-ordinate with you and your plumber or preferably, do the complete install using our own Gas safe registered installers or our in house plumbers.
We can undertake site clearance and levelling, pond digging, patios and garden walls, decking, raised beds and planters? Recent project near Linton to install a French drain around a cottage to prevent future flooding. Road closure and connection of new drain into Anglian Water main sevice along with very carful excavation into picturesque gardens made a simple job extremely inticate. After we had finished ( due as much to our clients hard work with the planting as ours and the architects skillful design and planning ) no one would know we had been there.
Our plumbers are Gas Safe registered so you can rest assured that their work will be of the highest standard and completely compliant - we can offer heating and plumbing systems as part of a build package or as an alteration/upgrade to your home. We can advise you of all the most up to date systems available and what will be the appropriate installation for you based on your criteria. Gas, solid fuel and electric including solar PV. We also have some experience with ground and air heat pump systems.
We can supply and install uPVC, Aluminium or bespoke timber double/triple glazed doors, windows, folding/sliding door sets. Please ask for more details or send us an image of something you would like to re-create and we can provide a detailed estimate.
Bathroom installations, carpentry, bespoke handcrafted furniture, kitchen fitting & electrical modifications are just a few of the services we offer.

Our team of carpenters can take care of any roofing project regardless of the requirement. We will build your roof from scratch either as a pre-fabricated trussed rafter roof, a hand cut roof or a flat roof. The coverings include natural slate, man-made slate, dozens of differing tile options, torch on felt and polymer such as Sarnafil. We are happy to repair shed and garage roofs, outbuildings as well as the main house and of course we will re-roof existing properties as well as install the new roofs on our major projects.

Taking the heart out of a home without plunging it into chaos makes kitchen fitting one of the more demanding disciplines. We are adept at minimising the disruption to our clients. Of course, this all depends on our client. Some are happy to muddle through, others go on holiday and let us crack on, and some take the opportunity to dine out! Whatever the brief, we are always sensitive to our client's needs and will do our utmost to combine good working practices, cleanliness, cost efficiency and attention to detail into the finished product.
