In 1938, Hans Knoll founded H.G. Knoll Furniture Company with the intent of bringing the Modern ideals championed at Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany to America. Eero Saarinen's objective was simple: he wanted to "clear up the slum of legs" underneath tables and chairs. As part of our new series Design Deconstructed, take apart the Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's iconic Barcelona Chair and chart the history of the chair's production. Revisit Marcel Breuer's inaugural modernist house in Litchfield, Connecticut, which features designs by Gerrit Reitveld, Eero Saarinen and Marcel Breuer.
We primarily think of chairs for their utilitarian purpose - sitting. What is less obvious, perhaps, is that sitting is a far more complex activity. Sitting is far from static, and in today's fluid, collaborative work environment, a variety of seating is required to flexibly adapt to the needs of different users across different activities. A person may sit in up to six chairs throughout their workday. From focused, 'heads down' individual work to casual, shared work between colleagues to more formal team work, Knoll's seating portfolio offers solutions that consider design, ergonomics, and materials for each of these occasions.
