The base can comprise plywood, softwood or even a HDF board, with the top veneer of hardwood typically ranging between 3-6mm in thickness. Here's a step-by-step guide to help a DIY enthusiast install an engineered wood floor over a concrete base. First, you need to do a moisture vapour transmission rate test. This test will determine the moisture levels of the slab. Concrete is porous in nature and the water vapour from the ground below may get trapped under the wood flooring and cause mould to grow. If the results from the test show a significant amount of moisture, a concrete sealer should be installed to block the pores and reduce water absorption.

All wood flooring profiles use the tongue and groove (T&G) approach for installation to achieve the best possible fit. Flooring made of engineered wood is often glueless - the pieces simply click together, or sometimes also require the use of staples or glue during installation. T&G flooring profiles are described as such because on one side of the board there is what looks like a tongue sticking out, while on the opposite side there is a groove. Installation of the wood flooring is made easier as you simply have to fit and click the tongue and groove parts of the boards together.
