The Oak Frame Carpentry Company specialise in the design and construction of structural timber frames. Commonly known as "oak framing, " this ancient technique enables the creation of beautiful, unique buildings that have been proven to last for centuries. From small decorative structures through to massive enclosed spaces, the versatility of wood is without equal in creating a diverse range of environments - from the ultra-modern to the thoroughly traditional. The Oak Frame Carpentry Company have a wealth of experience in all aspects of producing timber-framed buildings, and use this knowledge to combine the best of modern technology with the time-honoured techniques that have served carpenters for centuries.
Oak Frame Carpentry was set up in 1996 but the owner, Tim Potts, had been working with oak frames since his fascination with this type of construction began more than 30 years ago. This enthusiasm and passion for the craft is shown within the company in an emphasis on the understanding of the vast resource of British timber frame buildings, and the use of traditional hand tools and techniques. The cornerstone of our production process is English plumb-scribe carpentry, an ancient system unmatched in its ability to create accurate joints between uniquely shaped timbers.
Cladding your timber frame externally will ensure unproblematic weathersealing, and allow plenty of room for insulation. For the boarding a variety of materials can be used: Seasoned oak, green larch, waney edged, feather- or square-edged lapped or butted boards; to more high-tech coverings and technical installations.
Our experienced craftsmen are skilled in the repair of ancient timber structures, including Grade 1 or 2 listed buildings. We survey historic timber frames and can provide a schedule of works as required. Frames are restored with full structural integrity and with particular attention paid to understanding and preserving the original form. Decorative features such as chamfers, mouldings and carving can be applied in sympathy to the existing details. The Oak Frame Carpentry Co has always pursued restoration projects.
Modern Timber fames are often designed with fixed double-glazed units attached directly to the oak structure. This can provide a spacious light environment, with the frame visible on both sides. We can offer a number of fixed glazing options that have a proven record of weather tightness despite the tendency of the timbers to shrink and move as the wood dries out. We have pioneered the use of fully bedded glazing direct into rebates in the oak frame. We believe this to be a more elegant and reliable method than the planted glazing method where glass is attached to the outside of the frame and cover strips are attached to the faces of the timbers.
