As one of Scotland's leading design practices, we work with clients to create award winning building solutions which satisfy their current and future requirements. Through design excellence balanced with commercial awareness, professionalism and a careful attention to detail, our aim is to produce carefully composed, innovative and dynamic aesthetically pleasing buildings. We endeavour to respond to the site, its context and to carefully consider both environmental and conservation issues. Since our Founding Partner, Fred Stephen, started in business in 1977, James F Stephen Architects has grown to be one of the largest Architectural practices in Scotland.
Professor Fred Stephen worked in private practice for six years before founding James F Stephen Architects in 1977. Fred began the business from the family home in Glenogilvy in 1977 with Rosemary and two young children. They extended their house in 1982 and again in 1991 to accommodate the expanding business needs before designing and building the current Milton Studio in 2006, based in nearby Glamis, a historic Angus village. The location of Glamis has always been important to the success of the practice, being close to major Scottish cities yet serving the local community.
The HUB comprises a dedicated student residential complex of some 507 en suite study bedrooms and constitutes part of a potentially larger urban development along the northern periphery of the existing Dundee university bypass and campus. In addition to the 4 and 5 bedroom flats on site facilities provided for the residents include Reception, Common Room, Internet Caf and Laundry. All are contained within a controlled secure environment overlooking the courtyard, close to their apartments. The development ranges from 4 to 6-storeys relating appropriately in scale to the adjoining buildings.
We are able to provide full architectural services from inception through to completion. We are also able to tailor our services to suit the needs of a particular client or project and we would be pleased to discuss any individual requirements that you may have. Throughout your project, our aim is to make the design/construction process as straightforward as possible. We can advise on the need for and appointment of other consultants where these may be required (for example a Quantity Surveyor or Structural Engineer) and we will coordinate the input of these consultants throughout the project.
Private residences are designed to accommodate the simplest of human activities: eating, sleeping, bathing, and so on. Conceiving structures that meet these basic needs yet adhere to the vision and desires of a particular homeowner is what we do best. JFS Architects developed a brief with private clients for a bespoke contemporary house on the outskirts of Forfar with instruction to aspire to the highest levels of "design elegance and sophistication". The response is a 3 storey vision of glass, steel and render that fuses a "linear" bedroom wing to the West with a bold living drum to the East at the centre of a vast North facing site.
