Let me introduce myself - My name is Peter Phillips and my background is a lifetime in design with a particular passion that drove me towards designing and landscaping beautiful gardens. To further this passion Urban Tropics was founded growing over many years into one of the most experienced and dedicated design and landscape companies in London. Urban Tropics specialises in contemporary, minimalist, tropical, Mediterranean and exotic garden and roof garden design and build, operating primarily throughout London, but with projects as far reaching as South of France.
Whilst I have an appreciation of all well designed gardens, my true passion leans towards contemporary and exotic garden and roof garden design. To this end Urban Tropics excel designing and landscaping beautiful gardens throughout London and beyond. All our projects are supervised by a project manager who will transform my designs into reality, ensuring that all aspects of the design are implemented to the highest possible standards. We employ only the very best landscapers, craftsmen and where necessary outside contractors.
Urban Tropics offer a complete landscaping service employing master craftsmen for all aspects of your hard landscaping requirements together with a team of plantsmen who really care about creating beautiful gardens. Urban Tropics specialise in supplying and installing beautiful ipe South American hardwood decking on tanalised timber frames. Ipe is renowned for its longevity and resistance to algae, thus ensuring a slip resistant finish. In the USA it is often referred to as Iron Wood and for good reason.
Living in an apartment in London or inner city several floors up need not mean being denied a garden. Flat roofs, small balconies and terraces can be ideal for creating a garden in the sky. Of course the choice of planting is limited to pots and containers and therefore it is prudent to choose slow growing trees and shrubs that can spend many years with their roots restricted before needing any attention. In deed there are many plants happy to spend their entire lives containerised, providing that they are fed periodically during the growing season, and of course watered regularly.

So whilst we charge initially for preparing our stunning visuals, if you proceed with our proposals, uniquely, the full design fees will be refunded at the end of the project. This effectively offers the opportunity for FREE GARDEN DESIGN and consultancy and a substantial saving towards the cost of the project.
London Irrigation is a separate division of Urban Tropics specialising in the installation of garden irrigation systems throughout London and the Home counties. Apart from installing irrigation systems in all Urban Tropics new gardens, they also offer the same service for private and corporate customers as well as other garden designers, landscapers and architects. The easy to use automatic computerised micro irrigation systems ensure that all trees and shrubs, including potted and containerised plants receive the correct measure of watering - a deep watering which will promote maximum healthy growth in our all too short summers.
Garden lighting is an essential ingredient of any garden design. Your garden should be inviting by night as well as by day so garden lighting is an important key element of any succesful garden design. It is an aspect of design which deserves careful thought and planning and should be discrete and never dominating. Getting this balance right is essential. Uplighters in the beds can be so effective especially under architectural trees or plants - Those with open leaves like palm trees, ferns, and olive trees are examples of the most suitable subjects for lighting, rather than trying to light a plant or tree with dense foliage where the light cannot penetrate.
