Sheppard Architects (formally Lloyd Sheppard Architects) are the inheritors of a practice founded in 1898 by the well-known Edwardian architect William Curtis Green and passed through generations of the Lloyd family. We continue a tradition of attention to detail, creating the highest possible quality in every project. Our design work is always thorough and well considered and our buildings respond creatively to their contexts. Over the years we have won Civic Trust, Heritage and Conservation awards and have become highly experienced in historic building alterations and ecclesiastical work.
For many years our practice has assisted this leading City law firm as its growing numbers have led to increased demands for office space. The new building in Smithfield was designed to link to their existing building in Snow Hill and over recent years, interiors have been re-designed and fitted-out to suit other changing needs of the firm. Most recently new client meeting and dining rooms have been created from office space on the top floor. Office areas have been re-designed, replacing secretarial and ancillary spaces with greater fee-earner accommodation.
After downsizing to an apartment in this large Victorian house, our clients required an 'iconic' new sitting room, as well as the replacement of a poor quality conservatory. Particular site constraints and negotiations with the local planning authority led to the design of this new egg-shaped building. The deeply splayed roof light allows in maximum daylight with minimal solar gain. The structure is entirely timber framed and timber clad, with cedar outside (which was steam-bent to the necessary profiles) and bamboo inside.
