Our work is overseen by 11 Board members, all appointed by the Privy Council. This includes one independent, non-executive Chair and ten non-executive Board members made up of five members of the public and five architects.
If an individual wishes to use the title 'architect' in the name of a limited company or a limited liability partnership (LLP), they can only do so with the Board's permission. The Board may authorise use of the title in a company's name on the basis there is at least one person at the organisation that is on the Architects Register who will be responsible for any architectural work undertaken. Once completed, email the form to us at professionalstandards@arb.org.uk. Upon approval of the Declaration, the Board will provide you with a letter of non-objection signalling consent for use of the title, which can then be given to Companies House.
This page is a resource for anyone who wants to register with us for the first time whether you hold UK or EU qualifications or whether you want to apply to the temporary Register. You can make your application online, using our online portal. Online registration is both safe and quick, and can be made at a time and place that is most convenient for you. You can, if you prefer, apply using a paper-based form, which you can request from us by emailing info@arb.org.uk. These include the Architects Code of Conduct, information on professional indemnity insurance and what you will need to do in order to maintain registration.
It is closely aligned with a legal requirement of Section 20 of the Architects Act 1997, which states that the architectural output of a company using the title 'architect' in its name must be under the control and management of a person on the Architects Register. As well as covering the expectation to comply with general advertising standards, it explains additional expectations such as ensuring clients know the names of the architects managing their project. It's also important for job titles to be accurate and for the title 'architect', which is protected by law, to be used appropriately.
