There are basically three types of deck board to choose from softwood, hardwood or composite, and we have built many decks from all three. Cedar which is a beautiful softwood, naturally resistant to insects and mould (15 - 20 years without regular treatment). Hardwood such as Balau or Oak is the best choice where real wood is required, it will last longer (30+ years without regular treatment) and has a more attractive colour & grain than treated pine. Composite decking is now becoming more popular, with many manufacturers offering different products.
We have been laying artificial grass for over ten years, in many different settings. In general it is most suited to the smaller garden where the grass is constantly worn out with feet, or the shady garden where the grass just won't grow. But it is also suitable anywhere that a low maintenance, soft green surface is required. The choice of surface preparation is key to achieving the best result; ideally a rubber shock-pad is laid on a base of well compacted crushed stone dust prior to installing the grass.
Being close to the river, this house has a floor level much higher than the garden, leading to a design which softens the transition of levels by creating a small seating area midway between ground level of house & garden. Bullnosed stone steps give lots of extra seating space, as well as encouraging direct access to the large lawn beyond. Planting closer to the house further softens the steps, which could otherwise be quite a harsh feature. We also designed, constructed and planted the front garden and the side of the house including new boundary walls, fences and bespoke railings and gates.
