Ground source heat pumps work exactly as named, extracting heat from the ground to pre-heat an electrical inverter; thus generating heat (working in the opposite way to a refrigerator). This is then transferred to a water store of some kind - usually a thermo store cylinder or hot water cylinder. These units use electricity to generate the heat with a C.O.P. () of 4-1, which means to say for every £1 spent you obtain £4 worth of heat output. Be aware that these units usually work 24 hours a day, so extremely good insulation levels must be achieved to avoid these units costing more to run than a conventional heating and hot water system.
Under floor heating, as you would expect, is a system designed to heat your floor. There are a number of designs to choose from for any floor application; all under floor systems are designed to achieve the same outcome: to provide an even heat within a property at an efficient cost. Under floor systems operate from a central heat source this being gas/oil boiler, air or ground source heat pumps, solid fuel, thermo store, solar system, or electric boiler (to name but a few!). The principle of an under floor system is the same as a radiator - to heat the room to a set temperature via a room control.

While operating similarly to ground source heat pumps, Air Source heat pumps may deliver with slightly less efficiency, giving a C.O.P. of 1-3.5 to 3-9 compared to 1-4 on heat pumps. However, without the need for an expensive bore hole, they do offer the advantage of cheaper installation but slightly less C.O.P. to ground source. Requiring a very efficient property and owing to the lower heat that they generate, these units are ideally suited for use in conjunction with solar systems to provide heat to a house, preferably with an under floor system or radiators.
