Probably the most recognised and disliked of household pests, the cockroach is a resilient creature that can enter your premises through cracks around cupboards, skirting boards or pipework. As they tend to sneak out at night the first thing you notice may be droppings, which look like black pepper, or their eggs which are the size and shape of a small kidney bean and brown in colour. If you see one cockroach, you can be sure you have many more. There are over 3000 species of cockroach. However, only four of these are common in the UK at present.

People see squirrels as cute and cuddly but they actually cause more problems than rats. Squirrels are very determined creatures and once they enter your loft it is very difficult to get them out and keep them out. They like to make nests out of the insulation in attics and walls, chew wiring and piping. Listen out for noises in your loft space. Especially if tree branches overhang your roof! The damage Squirrels can do in roof spaces often runs into thousands of pounds. As soon as you notice any tell-tale signs, such as droppings, damage or sounds made by them moving around in the loft, contact us and avoid attempting to deal with them yourself.

The first ants you'll see in the house will be searching for a new food source. They are attracted by sweet items like juice drips or cake crumbs. Once these first explorers report back to the nest you'll soon have a trail of their colleagues marching with purpose round your kitchen cleaning up anything you haven't. There are several species of Ant in the UK. The most common being the Garden or Black Ant live outdoors but venture indoors to forage. These varieties are generally straightforward to eradicate.

Bed bugs emerge at night whilst the occupant is asleep and bite to feed on the blood. They are visible to the naked eye but you may first notice blood spots on sheets and itching from bites. The bite can cause severe irritation and possibly infection. Incidents of bed bugs are on the increase and are most commonly found in multi occupancy buildings. Despite their name, bed bugs can be found under wallpaper, in crevices of furniture, and even behind plug sockets. They'll stay hidden until feeding time but a check around places like mattress edges or headboard buttons may provide the evidence of the black marks of bed bug droppings.
