Driveways that suffer from holes and sinking have not had the correct amount of sub base construction to hold it up. We always dig out our driveways out to a depth of about 14 inches, depending on ground conditions. You will have a minimum of 10-12 inches of stone, compacted with a 5 Ton whacker, followed by a 2 inch layer of sand compacted with a 2 Ton whacker under your driveway, enough to support a 5 Ton load. Should you want to store a caravan or boat then we go deeper! A 1 Ton whacker is then used to fill in the gaps between your blocks or cobbles with fine sand.
