No matter what the age of your house is, it will have soffits, end boards, weatherboards or fascias of some description. Because they are installed at the roofline, they are usually beyond the reach of the average householder when it comes to maintenance, or repair. Not only are they hard to reach, but most work at height, has strict Health and Safety rules governing how work is carried out. Gone are the days when a borrowed ladder and a weekend of DIY would do the job. If you live in a town house, then the problem is almost impossible to solve as the height of the building requires scaffolding, a MWEP or a tower construction.
Chimneys give a house character. Although for many years they fell out of favour when we all converted to central heating, they have experienced something of a renaissance in recent years with the emergence of wood burning stoves. It's often a case of out of sight, out of mind. You tend to forget about a chimney until it comes crashing through he roof during a storm. OK, so that is the worse scenario that could happen, but do you know what the state of your chimney really is. It might just want repointing, it might need the odd brick replacing, or it might be unsafe and require removal or rebuilding.
Up until the 17th Century it was extremely unusual to even have rugs on the floor let alone carpets. Many house right up the the 1950s had stained wooden floors with a central rug, the concept of fitted carpets unbelievably, is a fairly modern concept. But today the idea of a house without carpets is a truly alien one, how tastes change. And tastes have come round full circle as carpets are now being usurped by laminate flooring. However, there are many flooring requirements in the modern house and you may prefer to use vinyls or cork instead.
If you ask your grandparents, not so long ago the toilet was in a lean to outside, and the bath was hung on the wall and hand filled with numerous kettlefuls of hot water.
