In the early 1960's, to supplement his farm worker's wages, Ron Brooks, would work weekends for a local chestnut fencing manufacturer. Winter months would see the whole family in the forest, cutting down chestnut trees, trimming and stacking the poles, and burning the toppings. Few chain saws around then, so hard physical work with an axe. As children, we were brought up in nature's adventure playground, wood smoke and bonfires to sit around lunch times, cooking on the embers and blackened kettle for a mug of tea.
